A really interesting article. How do you feel about being present at your partner's birth? If being beside her feels right to you, great, but don't put pressure on each other. Be honest, talk about it, and if you do decide to stick together, make sure you're both prepared! The Wise Hippo course includes LOADS of practical tips for birth partners, because we understand how important it is for you BOTH to feel confident in what to expect, and what your role might be. Message me if you have any questions or want to book a friendly taster class! #manfriday #dads #birthpartners

Huge congratulations to another Bumps family, it is so wonderful to be part of your journeys! "Thank you for having us on the taster course you did, it was fab, and really helped put my partner at ease. I am chuffed to say that we got our home-birth in the end... it all went perfectly." 💜

Have you thought about a homebirth? The most common worries about homebirth are that it might be unsafe or create lots of mess. Both could not be further from the truth! Read up on some other common myths here, you might be surprised... 🏡

Look at her face!! 😍 I love having siblings at a birth, assuming they are ready for it. What an incredible gift to the next generation to show that them that birth is real and beautiful and exciting, and not at all scary! I've been at lots of homebirths where siblings have either been present, or at least in the house, when a baby is born. Seeing older children climbing round the birth pool to find their school books, toddlers showing the baby their favourite dinosaurs just minutes after birth, or teenagers interrupting in the middle of crowning to see if they can eat the leftover pie out of the fridge...😂 It is such a joy to see kids taking birth totally in their stride, knowing that one day, they will do the same with their own babies. #nodrama #homebirth #siblingsatbirth

Preparation is everything. Have you begun to consider how you will physically, mentally and emotionally prepare for your baby's birth? Just as you may change your diet, take supplements, or give up smoking to improve your baby's health, there are things you can do in pregnancy that will significantly improve your physical and emotional experience of labour. Your antenatal classes are one of them! So instead of 'going with the flow' and settling for the first classes that are offered to you, do your research! From NHS to NCT, and yoga to Wise Hippo, find out what is available and the benefits of each. Remember, the earlier you start your preparation, the better! The Wise Hippo is all about empowerment- knowing your options so that you can stay calm and in control throughout your pregnancy and birth. We guide you through all the same content as an NHS class, with the added benefit of hypnobirthing (relaxation) techniques. If you'd like to know more, and have a sneaky preview of the 'hypnosis' aspects, visit my website to book a 'Bumps Basics' taster session! #birtheducation #pregnantincumbria #cumbria #hypnobirthing

A really common question I hear, both teaching and as a midwife, is 'Why on earth would you want to keep your placenta?!' Well aside from placenta smoothies and Kardashian-style capsules, the placenta is a hugely symbolic part of your baby's life. It is revered in many, many cultures around the world, and treated with respect as the 'life support' of your growing child. Check out the link below for some fascinating examples. You might not realise it, but your baby's placenta belongs to you until you give your midwife permission to dispose of it. So if you think you'd rather give it a more fitting end than the incinerator, just let them know!
